How to master your emotionsexpat
Depression is a mental disorder that affects negatively how you feel, think and act. Most times, it manifests in the form of anxiety, insomnia, stress, fear, and sadness. Depression is a menace that affects many people.
Depression among expats
Expats are among the set of people with a high record of depression. The reason behind this is not farfetched. Believe me when I tell you being an expat is not an easy task. Though some of them quickly adjust to their new life in another man’s land, several others find it rather too challenging. Whether we want to admit it or not, depression on many people translates into low efficiency and productivity. This explains why the menace affects both employees and their employers.
If you are an expatriate currently undergoing depression, this is the part you really need to pay close attention to. Imagine what the situation would look like if you can learn and utilize strategies that would assist you in overcoming depression. Of course, the result of this is that you would put your potential to full use.
In the light of the above, let’s take a look at “Meaning” and how it affects you.
“Meaning” and its impact on your emotional state
In an attempt to overcome depression, a major step to take is to start viewing things from new, positive, realistic perspectives. With this, I can assure you of victory over depression, and happy life in the end.
In a bid to achieve this, you should be able to provide the right answer to this question – what shapes the quality of your life? What I mean by this question can be best explained with this other question – what interpretation do you give to events in your life? This is what I mean by “Meaning”. For instance, two people may be exposed to the same experience but their view of it most likely won’t be the same. While one may see it as a challenge to improve on themselves, the other may consider it an obstacle or undeserved punishment.
The interpretation you give to an event would ultimately determine the emotional pattern you would associate with it. As a result, you will act in a certain way.
In your day to day activities, you will agree with me that there are people you love staying around because you perceive them to be always happy. Similarly, there are others you don’t enjoy moving close to because they seem to be always angry and frustrated. These emotions are influenced by three forces that develop the meanings we take from the emotions – they are called the Triad (Molders of Meaning) as coined by Anthony Robbins.
The actions that you take are determined by your emotional state. Whether you are in a pick state or miserable state is defined by how you utilize the patterns of physiology, focus and language. According to Anthony Robbins, these patterns form the triad. In other words, you can utilize the triad in a positive sustainable way to reach outstanding results or indulge in disempowering patterns which will eventually limit you in many aspects.
How do these patterns work?
Patterns of physiology
This refers to how you use your body such as breathing, posture, and movement. Anthony Robbins says: “emotions come from motion”. This means the way you use your body generates certain emotions.
When you breathe shallow, move slowly and feel tense in your body you will instantly feel depressed. On the other hand, you can breathe deeply, move your body fast and have an open posture to generate feelings of happiness.
Patterns of focus
Anything you choose to focus on, you will definitely feel. Anthony Robbins says: “where focus goes, energy flows”. Your focus can be influenced by factors like your values, rules for fulfilling the values and your core beliefs; they all constitute your identity.
When you focus on positive things, set realistic goals and establish outstanding relationships, you will tend to be fulfilled. However, when you focus on negativity, set unrealistic goals and lead poor relationships, you will generally feel overwhelmed and stressed.
Patterns of language
The moment we put words to an experience, it alters the meaning of such experience. The words we add to an experience refer to the questions we often ask ourselves, the metaphors we often use, and the incantations we regularly use on ourselves.
Positive language patterns usually empower you to create positive emotions. When you indulge in disempowering language patterns, you usually feel adversity.
At any time, your physiology, focus and language patterns produce emotions, which then lead you to a particular behavior. It is now glaring that the key factor triggering your depression is your perception of events around you. The choice is now yours; do the right thing and make yourself happy!
The correlation between these three forces may be subtle but definitely is significant. Here’s an instance; when things happen to you, what part of them do you choose to focus on is a function of your pattern of focus, and then what language you choose to use to interpret them is a function of your pattern of language (you may choose words that imply they are insignificant or words that imply that you have been insulted and humiliated) and then your pattern of physiology will determine how you choose to physically react to the situation.
All these factors are to some extent responsible for how prone to depression you are; even for an expat in a strange land surrounded by strange people. Expats face different events that have an impact on their personal, family and work life. In a given situation, you need to have insight into how to utilize the triad to alter your emotional state.Visit Our site for more update.
